About the Fuel Calculator
The Fuel Calculator computes the fuel needed and the total cost based on distance and vehicle fuel efficiency. Use it to estimate trip expenses or compare running costs between vehicles. Whether you're planning a road trip and want to know how much to budget for gas, or you're deciding between two cars and want to compare their annual fuel costs, this tool gives you an instant answer. It supports three internationally used efficiency units — km/L, L/100km, and MPG — so drivers anywhere in the world can work in familiar units. Fuel prices fluctuate, and this calculator helps you quickly see the impact on your overall driving costs without any spreadsheet setup.
Key Features
- Real-time calculation from distance, efficiency, and price
- Supports three fuel efficiency units (km/L, L/100km, MPG)
- Automatic default unit selection based on locale
- Simultaneous display of fuel consumption and cost
Use Cases
- Estimating fuel costs before a long road trip or vacation drive
- Comparing annual running costs when choosing between two vehicles
- Calculating monthly commute fuel expenses based on daily distance
- Checking how a rise in gas prices affects your monthly budget
- Estimating costs for a rental car during travel
- Converting between MPG and L/100km when driving abroad
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between km/L, L/100km, and MPG?
km/L measures kilometers driven per liter (higher is better), L/100km measures liters consumed per 100 km (lower is better), and MPG measures miles driven per gallon (higher is better).
Which fuel efficiency unit should I use?
km/L is common in Japan and parts of Asia, L/100km is standard in Europe, and MPG is used in the United States. The calculator automatically selects a default unit based on your locale.
Where can I find my vehicle's fuel efficiency?
Check your vehicle's specification sheet, the manufacturer's website, or the trip computer / fuel economy display in your car.
How much lower is real-world fuel efficiency compared to rated figures?
Real-world consumption is typically 10–20% worse than official rated figures (such as WLTP). Stop-and-go city traffic, air conditioning use, load, and tire pressure all affect actual efficiency. For a more realistic estimate, multiply the official figure by 0.8–0.9 before entering it into the calculator.
Does this tool support electric vehicles?
This calculator is designed for liquid fuels such as gasoline and diesel. It does not support electric vehicles' energy consumption (kWh/km or miles per kWh). For EVs, you would need to calculate using electricity consumption and your local electricity rate.
How do I calculate annual fuel costs?
Enter your typical monthly driving distance to get the monthly fuel cost, then multiply by 12 to get the annual estimate. For example, driving 500 km per month at 15 km/L with fuel at $1.70/L works out to roughly $56.70 per month, or about $680 per year.
