What is Tax Calculator?

It supports any custom tax rate, making it suitable for calculating VAT, sales tax, GST, or any other consumption tax worldwide. Choose from three rounding methods (round down, round up, or round), and easily convert prices in either direction - from pre-tax to post-tax or vice versa.

Key Features

  • Bidirectional calculation: pre-tax → post-tax or post-tax → pre-tax
  • Custom tax rate input for any tax rate (0.1% to 99.9%)
  • Three rounding methods: round down, round up, or round
  • Real-time calculation with instant results
  • Works with any tax system worldwide

Use Cases

  • Calculate the total price including US sales tax (e.g., California 9.5%, Texas 8.25%)
  • Add UK VAT at 20% to a net price to get the gross amount
  • Work backwards from a tax-included receipt to find the original pre-tax price
  • Compare the after-tax cost of the same item across different US states
  • Calculate Canadian GST (5%) or HST for billing and invoicing
  • Verify tax line items on expense reports before submitting for reimbursement

FAQ

Why are there no preset tax rates?

Tax rates vary significantly by country, state/province, and even by product type. To ensure accuracy, we let you enter the exact tax rate for your situation. Simply enter your local VAT, sales tax, GST, or any other rate.

What's the difference between rounding methods?

'Round down' truncates fractions ($9.99→$9), 'round up' rounds to the ceiling ($9.01→$10), and 'round' uses standard rounding ($9.49→$9, $9.50→$10). Check with your local tax authority or business for the appropriate method.

How is tax calculated from pre-tax to post-tax?

Tax = Pre-tax price × Tax rate. Then rounding is applied to the tax amount, and post-tax price = pre-tax price + tax. For example, $100 × 10% = $10 tax, so $110 post-tax.

How is pre-tax calculated from post-tax?

Pre-tax = Post-tax ÷ (1 + tax rate). For example, $110 ÷ 1.10 = $100 pre-tax. Rounding is applied to the tax amount.
